Hole In The Rock with Elephant Hill

One of the members of the 4x4 group is in another group called Early CJ-5. Members there own and use early (1955 - 1971?) Jeep CJ-5's. They had a group of four jeeps that were looking to visit a historic and remote trail - Hole In The Rock. I was invited and was happy to join in. In pictures where I am pictured with their jeeps - one of these jeeps does not look like the others - but yet I'm 33 years old - they're just a tad older (60's & 70's I think). All of us are on leaf springs (not the newer coil springs).

The day before the main trail we'll visit another popular trail, Elephant Hill. This trail is in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park.

In these remote areas, fuel is a concern. For the Elephant Hill trail, I will have ample fuel with Montecello fuel being nearby. For the Hole In the Rock trail, fuel is a concern for most of us. I am driving the jeep while the other four jeeps will be trailered to the trailhead. Near the trailhead, nine miles away, is Halls Crossing, a marina on Lake Powell. There is a gas station at Halls Crossing, but due to the low water levels, much of the marina is closed - including the gas station. This means, I'll need to have enough fuel for the trail plus back and forth to the nearest gas station at Blanding UT - 72 miles one way from the trailhead.

My jeep has a 15 gallon main tank with two five gallon jerry cans. I'll bring a single 2.5 gallon gas can. James, the organizer for the trip, will bring along an additional five gallon gas can for me - it'll stay in his truck for me to use at the end of the trail to make sure I can get back to the gas station.

In the end, by my calculations, I would have been able to return to the gas station with a couple gallons to spare but having the extra five removed any concern.

These two web pages detail the trip of the original travelers. This should fill in the history for this trail.
