September 12, 2006 - Tuesday
Waynesboro, VA to Boone, NC

The gent on the left is Paolo Varani. He traveled over to the U.S. and rode that bicycle from San Francisco. His goal was the east coast. About 31 days - riding each day - no days off. He had one or two days left in his journey. No helper crew - just him and what you see on the bike. Impressive. Here's his website www.paolovarani.com

Some comments regarding his trip
F-150 pickups - LOTS of F-150 pickups
We Americans have a thing about mowing grass
Courteous drivers - yes, courteous drivers - they move over or slow down when passing by the bike
Only one (that he mentioned) crazy driver - stopped to yell at him - in front of her kids
Bungee cords - the common item found on the road (trash was the same here as at home)
Favorite state - Utah - the colors
Kansas (I think) - the headwind - terrible, headwind
Something like six flat tires.

And off he goes!!!

So, I stopped at this foggy section just to take a couple pix...

Ken getting swallowed...

Down near the James River, the lowest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we stopped at Otter Lake.

No, this is not Otter Lake.

Ken taking a picture of me taking a picture of him

Otter Lake

There's the other side of the back and forth photo work

As we gain elevation the fog starts to present itself. The camera, with limited light, starts to take slower photos causing them to be a bit blirred.
