Head back west from Jackson and do a counter clockwise loop then head back to Sheridan via Grand Teton National Park.
Road cut & lower level pass from Jackson to Victor
Southwest out of Victor towards Swan Valley
Palisade's Dam (Palisades Reservoir) - just 1/4 mile upstream from the little town of Palisades. The
hill we're looking towards in this picture is named Calamity
Point. Things seems to be stacked too much against living in that
little downstream town.
Note the low level of the water and the 'bathtub rings' on the front face
of the dam (dead / driftwood). Also note the high water mark on
the concrete spillway in the foreground.
A bit of construction on US 26 coming towards Hoback Junction
Back in Jackson at the town square - find the hat!
With the controversy of snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park I just had to clip a picture of this sign.
Forest fire in action. Ken saw a sign saying it was a prescribed burn.
Nice, layers colors
Smoke from the burn - it was visible for an hour or two (about an hour
approaching and an hour departing). I noted that I could see the
smoke from the source point when we were about 57 miles away.
Riding under the main cloud of smoke - notice the orangish color to the
picture and to the white line markings of the road. The smell was
of burning as well as pine.
Still further away - smoke persists.
Heading North from the busy intersection town of Shoshoni WY. The road heads straight for the rock.
And popped us out into a nice valley.
Wind River / Wind River Canyon
If you have to wait for construction - this is the type of place you want to be
Something we do not have pictrures of is how the land looked when
viewed coming from the other direction - a series of gradual (but
massive) slopes. No jagged rock face.
Over at Thermopolis
Yep - it's big, just like their sign (note pickup at base)
Crazy (suicidal) dog
Most of the dogs riding on pickups would, for the most part, stand
around not doing much. This one was crazy. Seen here it's
looking through the pickup cab at oncoming traffic. It's poised
to make a run for it. When traffic is right next to the pickup it
runs to the drivers side to 'get' the traffic. I don't know if it
barked at the cars / trucks. The kicker is that it makes such a
quick lunge / sprint and goes so far towards the edge we thought there
were good odds it'd slip. Sometimes one front paw would slip -
fortunately both never did.
