Fuel injector replacement

Fuel injector replacement / upgrade has been on my mind for a bit and today's the day.

This is a 1990 Jeep - carbureted from the factory. A prior owner did the Mopar MPI kit so now this portion of the Jeep is a 1994/1995 YJ.  The MPI kit calls for injector part number 53030343, a 1-hole injector. It's the "fat body" steel and plastic style.

The replacement injectors are a 4-hole design. It is a slim body, all-plastic style. 1987-1998 Jeep Wrangler Cherokee Grand Cherokee Comanche 4.0, Replace# 0280155703, 0280155710, 0280155700.

The goal is to see if an improvement can be made in two areas - idle roughness / smoother off-idle performance and elimination of a long-crank to start for a hot motor that has sat turned off for a while.

The task went without surprise. I could not pull all six out of the manifold while attached to the fuel rail so I removed the injector to rail clips and removed the rail from the injectors. It was easy to remove injectors from the manifold one at a time.

Some of the manifold holes had some dirt. I used a vacuum and then a paper towell, greased to hold dirt, to pull dirt out.

The o-rings were lubricated with Napa Sil-Glide which made insertion smooth.

Initial thoughts is that the idle and off-idle performance is nicer - but maybe that's just me thinking it is because I want it to be. One hot-start test showed a quick / short start - will the issue be resolved? A few days of driving should answer it.

Fuel supply and return lines disconnected. Electric connections to the injectors disconnected (wiggle-and-pull). Fuel rail fasteners removed.

Injector clips removed. Fuel rail removed.

Fuel rail out - old injectors next to remove.

Greased rag to pull dirt from the manifold holes

New injectors

Injectors attached to the fuel rail

Complete.
