Canyonlands Maze District - Standing Rock to Maze Overlook

Today will be a somewhat long driving day. If we could drive directly across the maze - campsite 4 to campsite 5 - it's only 3.5 miles

We're taking a short cut that Trent saw on the map. It'll cut a couple miles off of the trip. It was our lunch stop as well. We were heading south-ish. We're now heading west-ish in a wish to connect up with the road that heads north to our campsite.

We're going to gain elevation. Low, center in the pic is the road moving higher.

We have moved up a level - one with wide views.

Looking down at the road we were on a bit ago.

12 Miles to our destination. Tomorrow will be the longest "dirt" travel day. We'll have 12 miles from Maze Overlook to this sign and then 61 miles to UT-24. Hanksville is another 20 miles on asphalt. How does that fuel gauge look?

We're at 103 miles since the gas station. We have 12 more today (115) and then will have 12+61 (to get to UT-24) (188 miles). From the spot on UT-24 we'll have 20 more to Hanksville for gas (208). The original route calculation called for 207 miles - we're on target.

103 miles on the tank and we're at just above 1/4 tank. We're right at the 1/2-way point as we'll be adding 105 more miles to get to the gas station. Will the 5 gallons in the two spare tanks be enough to get me there?

Not anything the mind needs to be worried about - on to some nice scenery.

No extra fuel added as yet - but I will add all of it later today / before heading out tomorrow.

The Chocolate Drops

Looking across the maze to our Standing Rock campsite of yesterday.
One spire to the left of the largest mass of rock is Standing Rock.

A defined overhang

There is a trail that heads down into the maze. Matt wanted to hike as much of it as resonable. If he's not back to the camp by 8pm we're to notify next of kin. I'm on the trail before it descends. Note the stack of rocks - a cairn - that marks the path to follow.

Another cairn

Trent

Matt, working down the trail.

He walked a fair bit of it but came to a spot he felt was to risky to travel solo and turned back.

Down into the maze

That overhang again

Pointing downhill - straight at the drop into the maze - I'll add some "insurance" rocks in front of the tires. Adding all of the spare gas into the tank.

Tomorrow, with the jeep on level ground, I'll take a picture of the fuel gauge.
