JW's BAM-CO map and text for Colorado and eastern Utah www.JimWilliamson.net/motorcycle/CO-What-To-Do-map.jpg www.JimWilliamson.net/motorcycle/CO-What-To-Do-text.txt (both files are needed, this is the text file) Updated: 2010-07 ================= 01 Centenial Drive (eastern edge of the Horsetooth Reservoir) use as part of a Stove Prairie CO-14/Rist Canyon loop. Nice views of the plains and hills. 02 Stove Prairie Road - technical / twists 03 Rist Canyon Road (Rist Canyon) 04 CO-14 along the Cache La Poudre River. Scenic. Reasonable twists. Traffic can be bad. Stop for a burger at Mishawaka ( www.mishawakaconcerts.com )and eat with a relaxing view of the river & rafters. 05 Devil's Gulch Road - The Glen Haven route to Estes Park. Better when heading from Glen Haven to Estes Park as a "pop over the rise" at the top of a hill you're presented with a gorgeous view. 06 US-34 through Rocky Mountain National Park. Grandure. Scenery. Possible/probable traffic. Entrance fee. 07 CO-7 St. Vrain River canyon. Sweepers. 08 CO-72 & CO-7 (Peak To Peak Highway). An "in the mountains" two lane. 09 CO-125. Sweepers through the ?Roosevelt? National Forest (few driveways or roads). (2009 - road construction on the southern 15 miles) 10 US-40 Somewhat tight canyon with the Colorado River and railroad. Only if close enough as it's short (~1.5 miles) 11 US-40 (Berthoud Pass). Winter Park, north of the pass, is good for an Alpine Slide and is the western portal of the Moffat [train] Tunnel. 12 Mount Evans - holds the title of the Highest ?Paved? auto road in the lower 48?? Two lane to the east of the park is reasonable (perhaps only if in the area) 13 US-6 / Loveland Pass - if in the area a nice alternative to the tunnel if not in a rush (adds 15 to 30 minutes) 14 I-70 Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnel 15 Pikes Peak (not paved all the way to the top) 16 CO-82 (Independence Pass). Quick switchback route up the east face of the pass. Western face, while the finish is a set of quick switchbacks, the buildup between Aspen and the switchbacks has a decent section of roadway that is only 1.5 lanes wide for two lanes of traffic. Edge drops with single car passable sections. 17 US-40 (Muddy Pass). Enjoyable if in the area. 18 I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. Pehaps the most scenic stretch of Interstate Highway in the U.S. 19 CO-133 (McClure Pass) with the Paonia Reservoir on the southern end. Several nice twists. 19a CO-133 from south of Carbondale to Restone a decent valley with nice mountain peaks. Driveways and traffic the detractor. 20 Grand Mesa (?World's Largest flat top mountain?) 21 CO-92. Sweepers, some aspen groves. Northern section has views of the deep valley. Southern section has long views to the distance. 22 Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. Views of the deep, narrow chasm. 23 CO-149 south of Lake City CO. Some large peaks, many trees, several wide valley praries. 24 US-550 from Durango to Ouray (you-ray), aka the Million Dollar Highway. Grand scenery! My preference is North to South. The build-up of the valley scenery from Montrose to Ouray with a "Where's the road to go" at Ouray. 25 Colorado National Monument. Scenery. Never been - would like to visit next I'm in the area. 26 CO-141 from Gateway CO to near Uravan CO. In my "top three" roads for CO. Scenery. Twisties. Little human marks (or driveways). 26a CO-141 between Whitewater CO and Gateway CO. Scenic, though different from the red valley south of Gateway. Detraction being driveways and traffic. 27 UT-128. Ride along the Colorado River. Red colors. Scenery. 28 Four Corners monument (if that excites ya). Use your GPS and the "true" 4-corners will show up ~0.5 miles away. 29 US-50 (Monarch Pass) 30 [1] CO-134 between Toponas and US-40, Gore Pass 31 [1] Then CO-131 all the way down to I-70/Wolcott is pretty fine as well. 32 [1] CO-72 (Coal Creek Pass) thru Wondervu is a fine road. If going west on it you get that monster view of the Northern Front Range just after leaving Wondervu. 33 [1] CO-58 (Golden Gate Pass) between Golden and the Peak-to-Peak Hwy is a top-notch route. 34 [1] CO-126 & CO-67 / (Pine CO - Deckers CO - Woodland Park CO) Best part is from Pine to just north of Woodland Park. 35 [2] CO-139 (Douglas Pass). Notes from Jim: When riding south from Rangely CO you're on a valley floor with brown rock valley walls. There is a fair bit of energy extraction in the area (wells & pipes). Nearing Douglas Pass scenery turns more green. Roadway was smooth with reasonable curves (not arrow straight). At the end of the valley the road twists up the east wall and pops you over Douglas Pass. The views open up at the pass - an eye opener the first time through. The southern edge of the pass is rock face scenery with trees filling in below. South of the pass to where the road straightens out are curves with, to me, a high speed limit. 36 CO-145 between Norwood CO & Placerville CO. Wonderful valley, red rocks. Moderate traffic. Western end (and west of Norwood CO) is on the Uncompahgre plateau with long views to the North. 36a CO-62 westbound from Ridgway - busy trek up and over a low pass then down a valley to the "Telluride cut-off". Traffic heading to Telluride, and a few driveways, the detractor. 37 US-50 dips south from the water and drops into a valley and then jumps out over a set of hills, with associated scenes and curves. Downfall is US-50 traffic. Enjoyable when passing through but not a destination. ========================= [1] Courtesy Joe / Sport-Touring.net:Bikerfish1100 [2] Courtesy Sport-Touring.net:Nitro
